Several days have passed since the Tai Po Wang Fuk Court fire. Many people are still processing the shock and sadness brought by the news. During this period, Child Cares Foundation has been closely following the updates and considering gentle, practical ways to support affected children and young people while accompanying them through this psychological trauma.

We understand that many children were not at the scene, but repeated exposure to fire-news reports and social-media images may make them feel nervous, find it difficult to sleep, repeatedly picture what happened and even show emotional reactions similar to post-traumatic stress. These are normal reactions after a frightening experience and do not mean that a child necessarily has a mental illness. At the same time, repeatedly watching disaster-news videos for a long time can intensify psychological stress and unease, whether one is near or far from the scene.

We therefore recommend that parents take the following steps:
Limit the time children spend accessing disaster news each day, watch together and explain the content in language they can understand.
Avoid having heavier adult discussions in front of children, so they do not hear fragments of information and develop panic or worries.

When emotions fluctuate, we encourage you to give your mind some space: put down your phone, close your eyes and breathe deeply, feel the air moving and let your body gradually relax. Caring for your own emotions is not selfish; it is the first step towards rebuilding daily life. Only with a calm mindset can we have the strength to face challenges. We encourage everyone to express their true feelings bravely without suppressing their emotions. Cry if you want to cry, speak if you want to speak; finding someone you trust to talk to, or releasing what is inside through words or drawing, is also a path to relief.

Finally, if you need support, please contact us at any time. We are here and willing to be your strongest support, accompanying you and your children as you face and get through this difficulty together.
